  • Calne police team up with horse rider volunteers in Heddington to tackle local issue

    Alert message sent 17/01/2022 15:42:00

Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

Over the past week, we have been made aware that off road motorcycles and quad bikes have been seen using some of the restricted routes and bridleways in Stockley and Hampsley Hollow in Heddington.

Concerns were raised from members of the public walking dogs in the location and by the local Wiltshire Horse Rider Volunteers.

The Wiltshire Horse Rider Volunteer scheme was launched recently by Wiltshire Police. A new initiative to help fight crime in rural areas and launched with 50 horse riding volunteer members of the public. Several Heddington residents, have been accepted as volunteers. They wear clearly marked fluorescent tabards funded by Historic England with markings including “Wiltshire Horse Rider Volunteer” along with the Heritage Watch, Horse Watch and Operation Apollo logos. They have received training on what to look out for including any signs of wildlife crime such as poaching or raptor persecution, general theft of livestock, heritage crime and fly tipping and report back to the Wiltshire Rural Crime Team and Calne Police after every ride.

After concerns were raised to us, Calne rural officers began to actively patrol the locations this weekend as a joined up approach to address this issue.

Whilst on patrol in Stockley Hollow on Saturday PCSO Mark Cook stopped to confer with the horse rider volunteers while they were riding in the same location.

Motor vehicles using Bridleways is an offence, they can also damage the ground to the extent that horse riders are unable to use the routes.

No motorcycles, quads bikes or other vehicles were sighted using the restricted routes or bridleways this weekend. Further patrols will be carried out in this and other rural areas around Calne.

If you witness or experience any Anti-social Behaviour linked to off road vehicles in this or other locations, please report it to us on 101 or via our online reporting form if appropriate.
